How to Get Out of a Funk!

quotes about joy, choose joyGuys.

I have no idea what it is or what has caused it, but the last week has been weird.
Just funky.
Ever have those.
Where all you want to do is shake it off? /

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it’s likely the compound effect of a few things happening in my life.  I’ve had a number of personal things happening over the last couple weeks, a friend recently learned her cancer has returned, and the rain in Pittsburgh has been nonstop.

I can usually say, “Katy, control the controllable.”  But, ugh.  Not this week.

Likely my mood has been a number of incidents that have just weighed on my heart until it just seemed like curling up with ice cream and sweat pants was easier than embracing the reality.

This weekend I applied these strategies and I’ve gotta say, I feel a lot better. Here are some of the tips I’ve applied to getting out of my little funk it up!

Map and mark down the good things that sometimes just go unnoticed.  Here are some of the things I wrote in my journal.  Start your morning each day with the good thoughts.  Before the demands of the day come into play, start with the blessings.

My husband
The health of my babies
A filled fridge
My messy office
Good friends
A personal business mentor who pushes me
Coffee
The fact that every morning I wake up and breathe in the good stuff.
I can just dance whenever I want.

Kindness is a natural mood booster. It makes you and others just feel better.

Fact:  Expressing gratitude can actually rewire your brain for happiness!

Ask yourself:
How can my trials inspire others?
What do I have to offer others?
What can I do today that can help someones else?
Are there charities that I would like to devote more time to?

I’ve always been the believer that every sweat matters.  To me, working out is more than just burning off calories, more than just building an ideal body. It’s about finding your inner strength. It’s about working out the issues you have and creating the ever important me time.

Step Away from the Source of Stress:
Sometimes it feels like the source of stress is calling us. It’s constantly asking us to find the resolution, to fix it, or to put a band aid on it.  But sometimes the best thing you can do is walk away.  Let it rest.  Clear your head and take time for… dare I say it… YOU.

That might mean you:

  • Pick up a book
  • Rearrange your living space
  • Hang out with your family
  • UNPLUG
  • Head out for a manicure and pedicure
  • Retail therapy
  • Enjoy a glass of wine
  • Binge watch some I Love Lucy episodes
  • Pray
  •  Go for a long drive
  • Get coffee with a good friends
  • Sit outside and soak it all in.

It might be an hour or a day or a week, but sometimes to resolve any issue, you need to clear your head of the clutter.  Get back to the basics and make yourself a priority.

Laugh
Although this might seem trivial, but I’ve always been the type of person who is happiest when I am making people laugh.
Sometimes the easiest thing you can do is catch up with an old friend or turn on reruns of America’s  Funniest Home Videos.

Lastly there are also actions you can take to avoid stress and tension in your daily life.

  • Get 7-8 hours of sleep a night to rest your mind and body.
  • Eat a natural diet and fuel your body with nutrient dense foods and at least a gallon of water a day.  I drink shakeology to get my essential vitamins and nutrients.
  • Soak in the sun. Get some natural sunlight! Vitamin D does a body good.
  • Smile.  Because it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile. So just do it.
  • Read 10 minutes of personal development everyday.
