Why I Broke Up With The 21 Day Fix Containers

Over the past few weeks I’ve been sharing my personal weight loss success with the support of a new program called 2B Mindset.  At full disclosure, about a month before the May 2nd launch, I was selected to be part of a test group of participants learning and using the program before it became available. During that time, I was following an intense at home workout program called 80 Day Obsession, and using the 4 nutritional principles of 2B Mindset.  I began to analyze my relationship with the 21 Day Fix Containers.

During my first month using the 2B Mindset program, I lost 6 pounds.  8 weeks following the program I am down another 2 pounds.  After seeing my transformation pictures, I’ve found myself answering one question in particular above all.  Katy, “How is this program different from the 21 Day Fix?”

I decided to share some of my personal insight to the program. I get it.  As a coach, I’ve been using the colored container system for the past four years. It’s helped thousands of people achieve amazing results.  It’s proven to be a successful system for effective, healthy weight loss. My own clients have achieved amazing results with it.  However, when my company launched 2B Mindset, my entire philosophy of weight loss started to shift.

I wanted to share a few key differences about the programs to help you decided which may be a better fit for your wellness journey.

What is 2B Mindset Program and 21 Day Fix Containers?

2B Mindset:  2B Mindset is a nutritional program created by a UCLA registered dietician and nutritionist, and she also totes a 100 pound weight loss story of her own.  Ilana Muhlstein focuses on the mindset of weight loss, and participants often describe the program as,  “freedom from food,” along with their weight loss success.  Ilana, describes exercise as, “extra credit”.

21 Day Fix Containers: is a designed 21 day exercise program that also includes pre-portioned colored containers created by Autumn Calabrese and certified trainer.  You learn how to measure, divide and account for food groups based on you current weight and activitiy level. With other program, Autumn encourages “timed nutrition.”  In other words, you eat certain containers at specific times throughout the day.

How Does the Approach to Nutrition Differ?

With 2B Mindset, Ilana creates a “Plate it System.”  There is no counting calories or colored containers. There is no measuring.  Instead, the plate is divided into a percentage of each food group.  It’s incredibly easy to follow while traveling, in social events and for less than ideal work schedules.  You will focus on three meals (sometimes four) a day with the program and there’s no such thing as a “cheat.”

With 21 Day Fix containers,  you base your container count on your weight and lifestyle so you know exactly how many containers you are allotted throughout the day.  Everything is perfectly portioned. Most people using the containers eat 5-6 smaller meals a day.  Calabrese focuses on a more restrictive approach to weight loss.

What About Meal Planning?

Both Calabrese and Muhlstein group foods, create, lists and provide excellent healthy recipes.   However, in 2B Mindset, you focus on 4 simple food groups: veggies, protein, ffc (fiber filled carbs), accessories (fats, sugars, and dressings, etc). Your accessories are the foods that make your other food groups pop! She refers to anything outside of these groups as “silly carbs,” and treats.

Instead of meal planning, Ilana focuses more on tracking the foods consumed as well as the plate it method and finding the trends in your own habits. There aren’t any fancy weekly meal plans with 2B Mindset, instead I create a detailed grocery list for the week that are loaded with my 2B essentials.

How Does Exercise Fit into the Program?

The 21 Day Fix and all of Calabrese’s programs contain workout videos to be used with the portion control containers.  The workout programs are well designed to maximize fat burning and increase your heart rate to burn more calories, fast.  2B Mindset on the other hand, focuses on exercise being extra credit. As you start to lose weight, you adopt healthier habits and likely exercise becomes part of the new routine!  2B Mindset, does come with over 40 nutritional support videos to help you achieve your results.  The videos provide nutritional support, recipes, as well as videos to help you understand emotional eating and mindset tools to help begin a healthy journey with weight loss.

What is the Biggest Adjustment for new 2B Users?

In my experience with the program, I’ve found that, the biggest adjustment is using the scale more often.  As one of the principles of the program, daily weigh-ins are part of the program.  Ilana explains that using the tracker and seeing the impact daily of your food choices helps you make happier, healthier choices.

So Which is Better?

If you are looking for a restrictive plan with a simple to follow meal plans, and you personally don’t necessarily struggle with emotional eating, the 21 Day Fix is a great choice.  On the other hand, if you are needing a long term approach to weight loss, have failed diets in the past, or need to real gain control of your emotional eating habits 2B Mindset might be a better choice. Both program promote weight loss, and I’ve personally experienced rapid loss with both programs.  I find the2B lifestyle, personally more sustainable.  With the 2B Mindset, I don’t ever feel like I am “on a diet,”  or have to say no to foods I love because it’s not part of the plan.   There’s definitely more freedom, but it certainly is not a free for all.
